Wasn’t the video yesterday on “Addicted Brain” fascinating?!  Understanding those concepts helps me to understand why guys, including myself,  continue to do the things that goes against everything we believe in.

Today we are going to meditate on some of God’s truth but before we do that let’s read what my friend Jeffery wrote about deer and the rut.  There are some similarities that helped me to understand a little more what’s going on but don’t forget that we are not deer!

We are humans with a conscience, a soul, and the ability to rewire, or renew our brains (we’ll talk about one tool in tomorrow’s video).

Praise God!!

The Rut

The other day I was driving back from a run when I saw something that I’ve seen hundreds of times before. I see it often this time of year. I saw a deer that was killed by a vehicle and had been drug to the side of the road. For some reason this time it stuck out to me and I began to draw a connection to all men everywhere.

I can’t claim to be a hunter. In fact, I’ve only been one time and that one time I saw one deer about 250 yards away. I wanted to shoot but my buddy who took me told me I couldn’t. He said it was too far and I wouldn’t hit it. I still think I would have got that one.

What I learned is that there’s a thing called “the rut”. It’s when bucks are so sexually motivated they cease to make wise decisions.   Deer are incredibly crafty and wise creatures. So much so, hunters will put deer urine scent on themselves to cover up the fact they’re in the area. Otherwise, deer will know and avoid them. When the rut strikes though, deer do the dumbest, craziest, most illogical things. The other night some friends and I saw a buck on the side of the road just standing there. It wasn’t spooked by my buddy’s new, large tundra. That’s because he was in the rut and had lost all ability to make wise decisions.

I also learned that some bucks make it to live a lot longer and therefore have more antlers. It’s a sign that they were harder to kill and that’s simply a result of being immune to the rut.

As I drove past the dead deer one thought came to mind. All men everywhere are capable to be in “the rut” at any point. We are all susceptible to losing our rational decision making ability and risking it all for the sake of that which could kill us. My prayer is that I never become like the deer on the side of the road but that God keeps my heart and mind vigilant through His word and the community of men in my life (preferably I continue to find the older bucks with more antlers). When you see a dead deer on the side of the road say a prayer God spares you from that outcome and take steps to protect yourself by investing in God’s word and surrounding yourself with other men.

Take some time to consider the scripture below, then answer the questions in today’s forum.

Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

1 Corinthians 6:18
