Speaker 1:                           00:07                     Some researchers have argued against the addictive nature of pornography, and these are typically the researchers funded by the billion dollar porn industry. Much like the tobacco industry funded its own research for decades to argue that smoking wasn’t harmful. The truth eventually won out educating the public about smoking, and we trust the same will happen with pornography. There is scientific evidence that pornography actually changes the brain. We want to take a closer look at the making of an addicted brain and some of the negative consequences that result in the addicted brain video. We discussed how watching pornography actually strengthens the porn pathways and erode your willpower to say no in the future will power is a function of the prefrontal cortex. Study after study has confirmed that using pornography repeatedly actually reshapes the prefrontal cortex literally eroding your willpower and moral compass. This phenomenon is called hypofrontality. This is when the prefrontal area of the brain has decreased blood flow and therefore has a decrease effectiveness and restraining impulses.

Speaker 1:                           01:13                     As a result, compulsiveness takes over and you have little ability to resist. This explains why so many porn users feel helpless to stop the behavior. Hypofrontality is why strong boundaries and accountability are essential, especially in the early months of recovery until your brain can strengthen this function through a time of sobriety. When your prefrontal lobe is working correctly, you have breaks against impulses and urges that need to be checked. When you give into an urge, especially repeatedly, your brakes grow weaker, but when you resist an urge, they grow stronger. Another result of an addicted brain is the accumulation of the molecule. Delta phos B researcher Eric Nestler has shown how this protein molecule accumulates and persist in the reward pathways of the brain in response to chronic stimulation due to an addiction. Dopamine that is repeatedly released at artificially high levels in the reward system causes the Delta phos B molecule to accumulate in the reward circuit of the brain.

Speaker 1:                           02:15                     This is a verifiable change in the brain because of an addiction and brain scans show the changes. The molecule. Delta phos B appears to be the molecular switch for all addictions. It’s presence in the reward circuit of the brain indicates an addiction. Whether that is a food, sex or drug addiction. Delta phos B functions as a sustained molecular switch was first initiated and then maintains a state of addiction for a relatively prolonged period of time after six to eight weeks of abstinence from the addictive substance. There is often a breakthrough for patients in their recovery. It is suspected that the decline of the presence of Delta phos B is behind the big improvement that many recovering addicts often see once they get to the eight week Mark of their abstinence from their addictive substance. The process looks like this pornography is consumed regularly which produces large amounts of dopamine.

Speaker 1:                           03:09                     This results in Delta phos B which in turn leads to the addiction related changes in the brain which result in craving and bingeing Delta phos B in the brain correlates with an increase in compulsive behavior as well as both sensitization and DS sensitization. Sensitization is the condition of being extremely sensitive to sexual arousing stimuli. After a man becomes sensitized, very little is needed to trigger sexual arousal. Sexual accused seem to be everywhere and sexual fantasy comes easy. Even modestly dressed. Women can cause sexual thoughts because a man is so sensitive to any stimuli. Desensitization or tolerance is when the addict needs more and more of a substance or pornography to get the same effect. This tolerance results from longtime exposure to porn and effects. Most but not all addicts. Dr [inaudible] said the male patients I worked with often crave pornography but didn’t like it. You want it more but if fulfills you less.

Speaker 1:                           04:13                     This is the insanity of addiction. The brain doesn’t release the same amount of dopamine that it used to when viewing the same kind of images. So harder and more deviant forms of pornography are sought for longer periods of time to get the same high as before. One porn user States is sometimes becomes a whole day affair, but it never ever satisfies. They build a tolerance, it must find harder forms of pornography to watch or they must experience what they watch to get the same high as before. This is one reason why married couples who watch pornography are 318% more likely to be unfaithful to their spouse. The non porn users just watching isn’t enough. After a while and the desire to experience what they watch overtakes them. These changes in the brain due to pornography are scientifically verifiable. Unfortunately, these changes lock a person into addiction, and in this way, porn is a sin against yourself, which is why God warned us. Flee from sexual immorality, all other sins that a man commits are outside the body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Watching pornography is a sin against yourself because it can change your brain in a way that traps you in addiction, but God’s grace offers forgiveness in Christ as well as freedom from this bondage. These brain changes that we discussed today can be reversed, but it takes time and a disciplined approach.
